Like other car components, the exhaust has a lifetime. You need to ensure you get a new one as and when needed to keep the car running efficiently and safely. The exhaust will be inspected during MOTs and services, but in the meantime, there are signs you can look out for. Here are some of the things you might notice if you need a new exhaust:
- Excess fumes. Check that your exhaust isn’t giving off more fumes than usual. This could be an indication that something wrong – for example, black smoke might mean a problem with the air filter, fuel injectors or pressure regulators.
- Cracks and damage. Visually inspect your exhaust to make sure it looks like it is in good condition. If there are cracks in it, this can waste fuel.
- Noise. If you suddenly begin hearing more noise, this could be an issue with the silencer. Listen out for any unusual noise.
